I started writing this story for my son Peter when we were both a lot younger. Along with Tom and Steve, we managed to get through the Dragonfly Gate in the frantic search for Mr. Gordon. But there the quest hit a yearslong roadblock. I didn’t know where the story would take us next, and life in the real world was getting extremely busy. So I set Tom and the Dragon aside—waiting for a fresh vision for Tom, Steve, Dudley, and Bobby (who later would become Robby when I restarted the story). That inspiration (plus a lot of perspiration) finally visited me during a season when I had some extra time on my hands. This at-last completed novel for young readers is, I hope you and Peter will agree, the happy result. I love you, son!

My wonderful wife, Christine, has my deep and abiding gratitude for her beautiful design work, her insights about the story, and her constant support and encouragement. You are the best, Darling!

My other son, Evan, read the manuscript and made several excellent suggestions to improve the book. Thank you, Evan!
